Good Haircuts For Someone With Tight Spiral Curls?

I have shoulder length, brown tightly spiraled curls and if I cut them too much, they spring up into an afro, which I don’t want. I am looking for a new haircut instead of the same old bun or loose on the shoulders look. If you can’t think of any haircuts, what about some updos? Thanks.
